Mary Layman is the founder of EduRise, LLC and President of TriMedia, a B2B consulting firm she has operated for 25 years serving growth-minded SMEs across marketing, automation, and training.

Her work with SME founders, some relationships spanning two decades, gave her firsthand insight into a persistent gap: SMEs lack affordable, trusted resources and a safe space to navigate uncertainty alongside peers who understand their challenges.

EduRise is her answer to that gap. Drawing on a Master of Science in Marketing from William & Mary (2024), Google AI credentials — Analyze and Reason on Multimodal Data with Gemini, Enhance Gemini Model Capabilities, and Build Real World AI Applications with Gemini and Imagen Skill Badge — and deep experience designing scalable systems for lean organizations, Mary brings both the domain expertise and technical foundation to build a platform SMEs will actually use.

EduRise, LLC was founded in April 2024 to deliver that vision through an AI-first, multi-sided SaaS platform built for the way SMEs learn and grow.

The effort is currently self-funded, yet she sees the potential of AI as a means to "flip the script" and leverage agility.

"For SMEs who wish to grow with confidence amidst uncertainty, EduRise is the brand of communities who share expertise while tapping into affordable, AI-driven, state-of-the-art resources.

Inspired by MEGA Mentors, our community outreach program called Future Business Owners partners with mentor-based organizations to provide training to underserved teens and young adults who wish to find their purpose and start a business."

A Journey from Micro-Services to Multi-Sided Platform

EduRise validates platform hypotheses through in-house micro-service delivery using real client engagements to test, iterate, and generate revenue before scaling each validated feature into the multi-sided platform. This approach is supported by McKinsey, PwC, and Lean Startup research showing that micro-first validation dramatically reduces failure risk and accelerates product-market fit.

Multi-Sided. AI-Driven. Member-Powered.

Members contribute educational material and digital assets. Structured co-creation teams deliver high-quality modules based on Design Thinking. Then we help optimize workflows and encourage learning by doing with data.

What are the Most Important KPIs?

Desirabilty

KPI: User Penetration Rate
This KPI helps us gauge marketing messaging/channels with ad spend, and whether it’s easy for users to identify the value to them on the platform enough to subscribe.7 Our multi-sided platform needs to attract users to achieve the network effect.

KPI: Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR)
This KPI relates to paying customers and is best tracked over time. So, you plan accordingly. When cross-referenced with active users6 over time and areas of activity on the platform, you get an indication of customer satisfaction and content value.

Feasibility

KPI: Revenue New Sources
This KPI assumes we launch the platform. Through a new client project that will use Python/Flask for modern web development, we will be able to duplicate, thus reducing the cost of development for the platform.

KPI: # of Courses Launched
This KPI sets the goal for the number of courses needed for potential users to consider it valuable. Potential co-creators will be limited while the product has a low volume of content.

KPI: # of Productivity Tools Launched
Productivity tools launch as stand-alone products as well as integrations with course material.

Viability

KPI: CAC:CLV

  • CAC = Customer Acquisition Costs
  • Dubbed the β€œStart-up Killer”
  • CLV = ARPU/Churn Rate
  • KPI: # of Courses Launched
  • KPI: # of Productivity Tools Launched
  • KPI: # of Marketplace Assets

It accounts for variable costs (i.e. support, transaction fees, refunds), helps determine the success of our customer retention efforts, and aids in predicting future revenue and profit. We must have a minimum amount of content to consider the platform viable.

What Must Go Right: A Roadmap

As a founder-led startup with no investors, every success factor is owned end-to-end. Here is what we are optimizing for in Phase 1.

Rapid Prototyping

External data source connections have been active since August 2023. Completing the first action item — visualizations that surface trends and pain points — is the seed to the entire platform architecture.

  • External data sources (GCP, BigQuery)
  • Google Cloud environment
  • Content team member

Time to Value

A critical SaaS metric. New members must reach an "aha moment" quickly after signing up. The free community provides initial value, but a curated onboarding journey must meet them at a pain point and guide them to a personalized dashboard.

  • Customer service agents
  • Customer journey design

From 0 to Thriving Communities

Leverage TriMedia's existing client relationships to ignite participation. Send personalized content directing clients to sign in and see their own project work — bootstrapping the community with real engagement from day one.

  • Minimum viable community size
  • Jump-start budget allocation

Platform Revenue Self-Sufficiency

Micro-service fulfillment continues in the short term but has limits. The platform must sustain itself through paid subscriptions and marketplace transactions for the long-term vision to be realized.

  • Content creator acquisition plan
  • Marketplace legal framework
  • Brand integrity standards

Built on Google and Battle-Tested Open Source
